Urban Tree Grate Redesign This project focuses on redesigning tree protective grates and fences to enhance the protection and resilience of urban trees. In collaboration with Trees for Cities, an NGO dedicated to urban tree planting in the UK, we explored solutions at Hillington Court Park. Inspired by natural defense mechanisms, the new design incorporates additional features and layers to defend against vandalism while promoting ecological sustainability and harmony between urban greenery and human activities.Ideation
The process of idea generation for this project was a new approach for me. Designing around trees, which have a set form, allowed me to use lino prints for the trees and then create the form on top of that. This method provided a unique way to blend traditional techniques with innovative design thinking
.Sketch Models
These sketch models represent the conceptual phase of the tree grate redesign project. Using both traditional sketching techniques and digital tools, I created tangible forms to explore the interaction between protective structures and trees. This iterative process allowed for continuous refinement, ensuring that the final design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
